Ryan is five months old today. I can't believe it. Also, his second tooth has cut through. One of the girls from mothers group noticed it yesterday. No wonder he was so grumpy the other night and his sleep has been all over the place again.

We went to the health nurse for his check up today. He's going well. His weight gain wasn't very much though. Probably due to him having the runs after his vaccinations. Anyway this is where he's at:

Length = between percentile 5 and 10
Weight = below percentile 5
Head Circumference = between percentile 50 and 75

The nurse didn't seem too concerned with his weight.

His head had a massive growth in the past month. :)

Anyway, for the girls on my list whose babies are starting to wake up during the night after sleeping through, I read something interesting:

Common concerns

Night waking - 4 to 6 months. The phrase 'sleeping through' means that your baby has mastered the ability to get themselves back to sleep after briefly waking. The age at which individual babies do this varies immensely. Some babies never sleep for more than 2 to 3 hours at a time during the first year. Other babies start 'sleeping through' from 6 to 12 weeks and then suddenly start waking frequently again at 4 to 5 months for an indefinite period. This can be quite unexpected and distressing, especially if parents are back at work.

It is important to remember that your baby's night waking has nothing to do with the way you are parenting and when a baby 'sleeps through' is not regarded as a developmental milestone, like sitting or crawling. Generally babies under 6 months can't be trained to sleep longer. You may wish to read more about cues and sleep associations here.

If you feel you can live with what is happening during the night....then there is no need to do anything. Your baby will eventually grow out of it.

Illness. If your baby is ill, this can sometimes temporarily disrupt their normal sleep patterns. If no obvious illness eventuates after a few days and your baby continues to wake and seems irritable, take them to your local doctor for a check-up, particularly for an ear infection. Moving house and holidaying can also briefly disrupt your baby's sleep patterns, but if this is the reason, then they should revert back to 'normal' after a few days.

Teeth, solids, wind? Despite popular beliefs, teething, hunger (starting solids) and wind are rarely the cause for changes in a young baby's sleep pattern. Sometimes a baby outgrows being wrapped snugly and/or being in a bassinet, so moving them to a cot and stopping wrapping may help, but it may make it worse. However, it is still worth a try.

Night feeding. If your baby has been doing without a night feed and then starts waking at night and seems hungry, re-introducing the night feed usually works better to settle your baby and will tend to reduce repeated waking. Using dummies, patting or rocking instead does not generally work as well as feeding. You may want to look at other solutions once your baby is more than 6 months old.

Late night feed. Some babies feed at 7 or 8pm and then wake between 1 and 3 am for a feed. Many parents in this situation try waking their baby at 10 or 11pm in the hope that this might make their baby sleep through the early hours. For some babies this does work, but for others it only makes the situation worse. If it is working, try to go to bed early (say 8pm) and get a few hours sleep before the late feed, so you can catch up on some sleep. This is especially important if your baby does end up waking again in the early hours of the morning.

The fact that it's normal makes me feel better. I just have to ride through it.

The weather is shithouse today. 38c/100f. How anyone can enjoy scorching heat where you can't do anything is beyond me. :) Looks like it's going to be crap for the next 6 days too.

Oh! I met my friend Mandy for lunch today. She went to Dreamworld on the Goldcoast and bought back some presents for Ryan. A massive dolphin (which is bigger than Ryan) and two little outfits. This one is my absolute favourite!!!!

It says Baby of Steel on the sleeve. :)

Now Ryan has three superman outfits. :)
